Forecast: Users will redeem $43B in mobile coupons in 2016
Consumers worldwide will redeem more than $43 billion in mobile coupons in 2016, an eightfold increase from the $5.4 billion in mobile coupon values subscribers will redeem in 2011, according to a new forecast issued by Juniper Research. Juniper calls mobile coupons a "key catalyst" for the mobile commerce market, especially for brick-and-mortar retailers, because the offers sit at the intersection of advertisements, payments and loyalty schemes. VeriFone acquires company that helps retailers swap registers for iPads
VeriFone, the largest maker of cash registers and other payment processing devices, has acquired Global Bay, which develops software that helps retailers use alternate devices, such as iPads, as payment options. VeriFone said the acquisition is part of the company’s strategy to leverage mobile devices more going forward, including smartphones and tablets…
Survey projects an increase in mobile and online shopping for the 2011 holiday season
PriceGrabber, a part of Experian, just released results of its second winter holiday shopping survey, revealing where consumers plan to shop for gifts this year. When consumers were asked to select all of the ways in which they will shop for gifts, 90 percent indicated they will shop online from a computer, up slightly from 89 percent in 2010. Forty-eight percent will shop in brick-and-mortar stores -- down from 65 percent in 2010 -- and 13 percent will shop online from a mobile device, compared with 9 percent last year. Conducted from Sept. 19 to Oct. 17, 2011, the survey includes responses from 2,322 U.S. online shopping consumers…
Report: 1.5B smartphone users to increase mobile payments by 2015
According to research reports conducted by Pyramid Research, by 2015, about 3 billion people will have access to 3G or 3G+ networks and the number of smartphone users will reach 1.5 billion by 2015. The emerging mobile platforms will improve purchasing and will determine a change in the current business model. The merchants, as well as the payment vendors will have to be aware of the entire mobile transactional ecosystem and to gain significant knowledge of these areas of innovation…
Starbucks has processed 20M mobile payments since January
Starbucks has processed more than 20 million mobile payment transactions, the company revealed during its earnings call Thursday. Starbucks Mobile Pay, the company’s pay-by-mobile application and in-store scanner system, was rolled out nationwide in January. The system, available at roughly 9,000 locations, lets iPhone, Android and BlackBerry users with the Starbucks or Starbucks Card Mobile applications pay with their phones by scanning 2D barcodes on the screen at store registers.…
